Student Feature: Meet Courtney Lamelza
Why did you think it was important to gain experience through a Co-Op during your time at Penn State?
I believe a Co-Op experience gives me the incredible opportunity to have extensive on the job experience and networking opportunities that will prepare me for my future career. I am getting hands on experience which allows me to apply the concepts I have learned about in my classes. I also have the opportunity to work with cross functional teams, vendors, and learn about the projects my coworkers are working on in order to get a broader perspective of the industry I hope to join. I love being a valued member of my team making meaningful contributions. I also have the opportunity to have an amazing mentor that meets with me frequently to help me develop in my role as well as lifelong professional skills.
How has your Co-Op experience contributed to your academic and career goals so far?
My Co-op experience has ignited and confirmed my passion for the career I will be pursuing in supply chain. This experience has given me exposure to every aspect of the end-to-end supply chain and many talented individuals and mentors. I have always been excited by how broad the supply chain is, and this experience has highlighted just how many opportunities there are. It is providing me with transferable and valuable skills for my career.
What attracted you to Victoria’s Secret’s Co-Op program for this spring semester, and how does it align with your professional interests?
I was drawn to Victoria’s Secret’s Co-Op program because I felt like it aligned with my professional interests and gave me the opportunity to explore what my future career would look like. In my role as a Supply Chain Planning and Analytics co-op, I have been able combine the concepts I have learned through my supply chain major and my minor in information systems management to see firsthand what is possible. I have learned how to communicate effectively with vendors, managing the flow of inventory and conducting monthly KPI reviews. I have learned how to utilize software and technology in new and innovative ways. I also enjoy being able to run reports and analyze impactful data.
Are you taking classes this semester, and if so, how are you finding the balance between work and school?
I am currently taking 3 online classes in addition to working full time. I am taking BA 342 with Professor Travis Lesser, MIS 431 with Professor Kitty Riley, and Astro 7N. I have been finding a balance by ensuring I have dedicated times in the evenings and weekends in order to complete my class work. I have also prioritized staying organized and keeping track of all commitments through my google calendar. This semester has taught me the importance of making the most of your time; I schedule my free time with intention.
What has been your most rewarding experience at Penn State, whether through academics, extracurriculars, or professional development?
One of the most rewarding experiences I've had at Penn State for my personal and professional development was studying abroad in Florence, Italy this past summer. I took Introduction to Oil Painting through ISI Florence and SCM 399, Marble to Monument: Integrating Global Supply Chains, Analytical Skills & Italian Culture, which was led by Kitty Riley and Norm Aggon. During this experience I was able to go on four trips to various small businesses and learn about their supply chains which gave me a new perspective on how businesses operate internationally. I loved being able to travel and immerse myself in another culture.
What student organizations are you involved in at Penn State, and how have they influenced your personal or professional growth?
I am very involved on campus. I am a member of Supply Chain Management Association, ServeState, and I am a Penn State Dance MaraTHON Captain. SCMA has given me so many opportunities to network with professionals and learn more about various industries. ServeState is a student organization committed to service and philanthropy. For THON 2025, I was selected to be an Order Management Captain on the Merchandise committee. The Merchandise Committee's responsibility is to promote THON's brand through the sale of quality merchandise throughout the year. I work with an incredible group of captains and committee members whose responsibilities include managing inventory, collecting and leveraging data, fulfilling merchandise orders, and planning sales throughout the year. I am incredibly grateful to be involved in these amazing organizations; SCMA, ServeState, and THON have all helped me grow both professionally and personally.
