Indicate Your Interest
Interested in serving on the Alumni Society Board? Review the responsibilities and bylaws for Alumni Society Board service and explore what it means to serve as an At-Large Director.
Board Candidate Process
The first step is to complete the Alumni Society Board Interest Profile. This gives the Board Culture & Recruitment Committee an opportunity to learn more about your background and volunteer experiences. For the 2027 cycle, please fill out the Profile by October 26, 2026.
The Board Culture & Recruitment Committee reviews submitted profiles to identify alumni who may be a good fit for current or future Board opportunities. In addition to an individual’s experiences, the committee considers the current composition of the Board and its evolving needs, including areas of expertise and representation.
Selected candidates will be invited to participate in an interview with members of the Board Culture & Recruitment Committee. These conversations provide an opportunity to learn more about your interest in Board service, leadership and collaboration experiences, availability and commitment, and potential contributions to the Board.
Following the interviews, the committee develops a recommended slate of candidates for the upcoming election. The slate reflects a holistic review of candidates and the Board’s current and future needs, including the desired mix of skills, expertise, perspectives, and representation. Per the bylaws the slate cannot be more than double the number of open seats. In 2027, there are TWO open seats on the Board and the slate cannot be more than FOUR candidates.
Candidates selected for the recommended slate will be invited to submit a Personal Statement. These statements are shared with the voting members of the Smeal Alumni Society Board to help them learn more about each candidate.
The recommended candidates are presented to the voting members of the Board for election in April.
Building a Pipeline for Future Leadership
Because there are a limited number of Board positions available each year, completing the interest profile does not guarantee an interview, placement on the slate, or election to the Board. However, we encourage alumni to express their interest even if they are not seeking a position in the immediate election cycle. The process allows us to build relationships with engaged alumni and develop a strong pipeline of potential Board leaders for future opportunities.

Hammond Society
The recognizes Alumni Society Board members who have completed two consecutive terms of service. Named for Dean Emeritus J.D. Hammond, the society honors alumni whose long-term leadership and commitment have helped strengthen the Penn State Smeal College of Business community.
