2024 Student Org Spotlight: Business Analytics & Information Systems Association

Interested in learning about information systems and want to get involved in a student organization? The Management Information Systems Association (MISA) is a student-run organization at Penn State dedicated to the professional development of its members.

Sarah Langer, MISA President and business analytics & information systems and economics student, shares about how this organization presents great professional development opportunities for any business major at Smeal. Learn more about the mission of the organization, how students can get involved, and more about the membership experience.

How would you best describe your student organization?

The Management Information Systems Association is where business meets technology. Not only is it a great opportunity to meet other MIS majors, but this organization provides great tools to sharpen your skills for every business major.

MIS is the smallest major within Smeal, but the most common minor! It has applications across all Smeal majors, so I highly encourage anyone to check it out. Additionally, being a smaller organization provides great potential for leadership progression for anyone looking to get involved in the club!

Who is on the executive board for the 2024-2025 academic year?

  • President: Sarah Langer

  • Vice President: Liam Flynn

  • Treasurer: Hitee Sachdeva

  • Secretary: Om Dobariya

  • Director of Involvement: Mark Hepperlen

  • Web Manager: Khadidiatou Dai

  • Fundraising Chair: Jaden Evans

What can a member expect to get out of their experience in your student organization?

The Management Information Association equips students with the technical skills they need in the job force (as data analysts, technical consultants, etc), as well as professional connections. MISA hosts workshops on hard skills such as Excel, Tableau, SQL, and Python, and is open to expanding topics such as casing and AI. MISA collaborates with a variety of firms, focusing in the consulting, technology, and supply chain space.

MISA members are updated with professional opportunities across campus. MISA provides a great way to connect with other students in MIS classes for help with course selection, resume tailoring, and group collaboration.

As a member of MISA, there is no major restriction, and the organization welcomes majors such as Supply Chain, Finance, Marketing, IST, and Accounting.

What is your favorite memory with MISA?

My favorite memory with MISA would have to be our fall headshot meeting. Our club hosted a headshot workshop in the Millenium Science Garden, taking professional portraits of MISA members and donating all proceeds to Relay for Life. Having been on both the previous and the current exec board, I can vouch for the great culture and banter within this club from day to day. In this case, this memory stood out to me as I felt extremely proud of our executive board for making an actionable difference in the community.
