Did you always want to work in sustainability?

No. While I always knew that I wanted to pursue a career that allowed me to help others, sustainability was not even a thought in my younger years. But, as soon as I was introduced to the field (and its many different facets), I knew that it was a perfect fit for my skills and ambitions.

What is a challenge you are currently facing and how are your overcoming it?

The biggest challenge I am currently facing is defining a realistic and cost-effective decarbonization roadmap for our North America business. Technologies are rapidly advancing, but the cost associated with them is often a barrier.

What has fundamentally changed about your industry since you started working in it?

I have worked in the CPG industry since 2008, so I have witnessed quite an evolution when it comes to sustainability in the industry. When I first began this career journey, sustainability was not “mainstream”. Many companies were just beginning their journey and Net Zero targets, integrated reporting and responsible sourcing were not common terms. Today, all three are key to a good sustainability strategy.

What is the most important lesson you have learned in business?

The most important lesson I have learned is that building relationships with both internal and external stakeholders is critical. I learned this early in my career and truly believe that it has been one of my success factors. You can’t go on this journey alone!

What are three words that would describe Unilever’s commitment to sustainability?

Bold, Unique and Holistic
