Did you always want to work in recruiting?
I didn't know recruiting was even a career path when I was in college and my early career. I truly fell into recruiting when I was working at a company that was growing and needing to hire. I have always enjoyed matchmaking and bringing people together so when I reflect back, it totally makes sense that I've made a career out of it!
What is a challenge you are currently facing and how are your overcoming it?
I am challenged every single day to keep my team informed, connected and happy. The larger your company gets, the more accountability you have to provide diverse solutions so everyone has what they need and feels supported. I have learned that I most likely won't always be able to make everyone happy at the same time, but if I can take the time to listen and respond, at least I can make them feel seen and heard.
What has fundamentally changed about your industry since you started working in it?
Technology has dramatically changed the way we recruit. When I first started recruiting, I relied on Craigslist, classified ads and posting job opportunities on bulletin boards in local coffee shops and libraries. There are several resume platforms that have elevated the job search and recruiting experience and also created a ton of much needed efficiency and visibility. Overall, LinkedIn is the biggest game changer when it comes to technology because it provides visibility on the talent pool and individuals, allows you to truly connect and build a relationship while actively sourcing, soliciting and posting/searching jobs.
What is the most important lesson you have learned during your career?
Networking is king and opportunities are often presented because of WHO you know and not WHAT you know. WHO you know does not mean you have to be born with a silver spoon. It's more about WHO you decide to connect with, WHO you know who knows someone who knows someone...pave your own path to build your own community.
What are three words that would describe the future of recruitment?
Connection. Transparency. Empathy.
