Smeal College of Business SCIS Alumnae Makes ISM’s 30 Under 30
Every year the Institute for Supply Chain Management (ISM) releases a list of their “30 Under 30 Supply Chain Stars,” with this year marking its eighth release. The program recognizes emerging supply management professionals who have proven to be exemplary young leaders in both supply chain management and procurement who display passion, zest, and creativity in their contributions to the field.
The Center of Supply Chain Research® is excited to share this year’s list of 30 Under 30 as it includes a Penn State alumnae from the Smeal College of Business: Delaney Liu, the Category Manager of Global Procurement for the U.S. Steel Corporation. Having graduated in the summer of 2019, Liu holds a degree in supply chain management and information systems with a minor in international business. She was also an avid member of the Women’s Club Soccer Team from freshman to senior year, as well as a member of the Kappa Alpha Theta Fraternity for women.
“Some of my favorite memories are definitely being involved with club soccer. I made almost all of my college friends through playing, whether that was the girls on the team or students who were members of different club sport orgs,” recalled Liu. “It’s funny, when I look back on my time at Penn State, some of my most vivid memories are studying with friends at the library or meeting up at the business building to work on a group project. Obviously, I enjoyed my time outside of the classroom, but there was definitely a sense of ‘we’re all in this together’ and the energy you got from that was pretty cool.”
Liu is excited to be on this year’s list and feels that studying at Smeal has been a great asset to her career. She found that in addition to the esteemed faculty within the college, Smeal maintains an unparalleled network for building student careers.
“The companies interested in recruiting Smeal students are some of the best in their industry; they wanted a spot at the supply chain career fair and they wanted to hold that 1-hour information session on a Tuesday night— I think that’s what sets Smeal apart,” she shared. “I think it goes without saying that the supply chain career fair was the most beneficial thing I did. That was the beginning of where I am today.”Through Smeal, Liu secured a clinical supply chain strategy co-op under Janssen Pharmaceutical Companies of Johnson & Johnson. There she assisted in the strategy for delivering the roll out of Just In Time (JIT) where she developed a central training repository and knowledge base, training documents, and a JIT process map.
Upon graduation, Liu joined U.S. Steel Corporation as a Management Associate and worked her way up to her title today. CSCR is extremely proud of this alumnae for her continued achievements and wishes her all the best in future endeavors.
“It was really rewarding being named as one of ISM’s 30 under 30,” Liu said in closing. “It’s one thing when you’re recognized within your own organization, but it’s an entirely different feeling when people outside of your organization want to congratulate you for the impact you’re having— it pushes you to keep working!”
